Carnegie Center Receives National Recognition

WINNER OF THE 2009 METLIFE INNOVATIVE SPACE AWARD
Awarded $10,000 for exceptional art space and programming

Lexington, Kentucky- Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) and MetLife Foundation announced the six winners of the nationwide, competitive 2009 MetLife Innovative Space Awards. The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning was awarded $10,000 in recognition of itsrobust programming for professional writers and commitment to fostering improved literacy levels in its local community, recognizing the impact that art can have on basic life skills. The awards recognize outstanding efforts in the design and development of affordable space for artists, which is an integral part of LINC's Space for Change: Building Communities Through Innovative Art Spaces program. These spaces provide a stable foundation from which artists may pursue their works and shape the neighborhoods they inhabit. The winners were selected from more than 90 organizations in 29 states.

Left vacated for nearly a year after the Lexington Public Library moved locations, the historic Carnegie library building was restored to public use with the idea of the Carnegie Center. Serving as the home of Lexington's Public Library since 1906, the building now continues on as a community learning and arts center. Since its inception, the Carnegie Center has become an established haven for writers, as well as a welcoming place that addresses the needs of Lexington's diverse community. From ESL courses for recent immigrants, to advanced workshops for established writers, the Carnegie Center exhibits a range of offerings for creative individuals at any stage of education. The building is also home to learning and arts organizations, aspiring and professional authors, writing/book discussion groups and the site for other non-Carnegie events, including the Kentucky Women Writers Conference. In addition to offering a gallery and performing arts events, the center's emphasis on writing and promoting books by regional authors has made it the state's literary hub.

"The Carnegie Centerand the other winning programs serve as models for communities interested in creating and benefiting from sustainable art spaces."

"The Carnegie Center exemplifies how the development of affordable living and working spaces for artists can play a powerful role not only in the lives and careers of those artists, but in the communities where these spaces are located. The Carnegie Center is an outstanding example of excellent programming, socially progressive real estate development, and the ability to provide creative and economic sustenance in a community," said Judilee Reed, executive director, LINC.

Four other winning organizations each received a $10,000 award:

City of Asylum/Pittsburgh, Pa. provides outstanding levels of service to artists in exile through a residency program with a full range of support services for the personal and professional recovery of artists and their families.

Open Book 2.0 in Minneapolis, Minn. exemplifies collaboration among local non-profits. Three independent organizations, The Loft Literary Center, Milkweed Editions, and Minnesota Center for Book Arts pooled resources to form a vibrant literary arts center.

Soo Theatre and STARS in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. jumpstarted the economic and cultural revitalization of its area by bringing arts education and programming to the region. Soo Theatre is now a cultural asset that allows the local hospital and university to attract and retain talent.

Watts House Project in Los Angeles, Calif. meshes artists' skills with local needs to improve households, creating a bond between artist and neighbor by integrating sustainable building and landscaping into everyday life.

The grand prize winning organization, The International Sonoran Desert Alliance (ISDA), received $50,000 in recognition of its development of the Curley School, an exceptional, community-engaged artist space anchoring an arts-based revitalization movement in the border town of Ajo, Ariz. and neighboring Tohono O'odham Nation and Sonora, Mexico.

"Artist spaces should be fundamental to well-planned communities. We hope a broader set of stakeholders, including policymakers, planners and other civic leaders, will embrace arts and culture as significant components of effective development strategies," said Susan Silberberg-Robinson, associate project director, MetLife Innovative Space Awards and lecturer in Urban Design and Planning, MIT.

Application Deadline Extended: January 15

The Carnegie Center is calling on young women in grades 9-12 to apply to the Young Women Writers Program, a FREE series of intensive workshops focused on self-expression through writing. Applications are due no later than Friday, January 15, 2010. Selection will be limited to 15 participants.

Those admitted to the program will receive full scholarships covering all instruction and materials as well as lunch at each session. Five sessions, held on consecutive Saturdays during January and February 2010, will incorporate creative writing exercises in flash fiction, creative nonfiction, memoir, poetry and young adult fiction. The selected participants will gather for five 4-hour workshops taught by experienced writers with expertise in a variety of fields and genres. Download the application by clicking here.

Great Game, Great Seats, Great Cause!

UK-Louisville Basketball Ticket Auction: Great Game, Great Seats, Great Cause!

Kelly Flood and Neil Chethik have donated to the Carnegie Center two tickets for the UK-Louisville basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at 3:30 p.m. This will be the first meeting of head coaches John Calipari and Rick Pitino since Calipari took over at UK. The seats are in the Lower Level of Rupp Arena, about a dozen rows from the floor (Section 11, Row J).

The Carnegie Center is auctioning off the seats. All of the money from the auction will go to support the Center's mission to promote literacy and learning for all ages.

We are starting the bidding at $500, and are accepting bid-raises in $100 increments only. If you'd like to make a bid, please call or send an email kgreene@carnegieliteracy.org or (859) 254-4175. All bids will be taken in the order of the time stamp indicated on the e-mails received (or the time of the phone call). The latest bidding will be posted here on the Carnegie Center's blog, www.CarnegieCenterBlog.blogspot.com. Visit the blog or contact the center for the current bid.

Bids will be taken until 5 pm on Monday, Nov. 23. At that point, we will contact the highest bidder, who will have 24 hours to pay for the tickets.

January 30: (9-1 pm) cultivating imagery, “Beneath the Door in the Floor”: The Hidden Witnesses in our Writing, led by Bianca Spriggs

February 6: (10-2 pm) flash fiction, “Slowing down to draw whip-lash fast stories from the magic in our hurried lives,” led by Sarah V. Combs

February 13: (10-2 pm) memoir, “Finding the Thread,” led by Hannah LeGris

February 20: (10-2 pm) poetry, “Nice Hat. Thanks:” The Poetry of Collaboration, led by Emma Bolden

February 27: (10-2 pm) YA fiction, “Voice, Plot, and Dialogue,” led by Bethany Griffin

All sessions, including a catered lunch, will take place at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington. The Center is located downtown at 251 West Second Street in Gratz Park. Participants must commit to attending at least four of the five workshops; attendance at all five sessions is desired, and participant availability and commitment will be considered as applications are reviewed.

PERFORMANCE

In spring 2009, the young women will be directed in a public performance to showcase their individual and collective writing talents. The performance is scheduled during Downtown Gallery Hop on Friday, April 16 at 5:30 pm. All participants will receive a $50 stipend for their performance and will be invited to read once more during the 2010 Kentucky Women Writers Conference in the fall.

ADMISSION

To be considered for the Young Women Writers Program, please submit a cover sheet (can be requested from the center) and a letter stating your interest and motivations for participation. Additionally, a writing sample (no more than 5 pages long) should be attached to this letter. A creative writing piece is suggested. Information should be mailed or brought to the Carnegie Center by January 15. Selection will be limited to 15 participants.

Today's schedule includes:

We want you to film it and tell us their story!

The Lexington Film League is pleased to announce the Do-ers Community Video Contest. The contest invites Kentucky filmmakers, and non-filmmakers, to create a 5 minute (or less) video about interesting people, activities, events, etc. happening in their Ky. community.

LFL has partnered with Make Yourself Necessary to inspire people to "tell the world they care" and to build a network of education about happenings throughout the state that many (or most) people don't know about.

There is a cash prize to the winner, plus a people's choice prize that encourages the public to vote on their favorite video. The winner of the cash prize splits the sum with a non-profit organization of their choice.

Every work of fiction is told from a specific point of view, and this choice has a major influence on how the story is told. In this seminar, we will explore different points of view, and the strengths and limitations of each. This class will be a combination of lecture, exercises, and readings from writers like Charles Dickens, William Faulkner, Mary Gaitskill, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Five Banned Books Everyone Must Read

5) And Tango Makes Three, by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell

True story of two male penguins at NYC's Central Park Zoo who become a couple, are given an egg to hatch by the zookeeper, and parent a penguin named Tango. Banned from some school libraries for its "homosexual-lifestyle" content.

4) Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark, by Alvin Schwartz

A collection of tales about eerie horror and dark revenge. Banned from some school libraries because of its gruesomeness.

3) Forever, by Judy Blume

Story of a high school girl who falls in love and has eventually sex with her boyfriend. Banned from some school libraries because of its depiction of high school sex as "normal," and because the girl visits a clinic to get birth control.

2) Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence

Story of a woman whose husband is rendered impotent by war injuries; she takes a lover. Banned by some libraries because of its explicit, artistic depictions of sex and its normalization of adultery.

1) Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Story of a future society in which books are burned because they inspire independent thinking. Ironically, in the years after the book was written, Ballantine Books, fearful of contaminating young readers, censored 75 separate sections of the novel, mostly those that used the words "hell" and "damn."

This past Saturday at the Kentucky Women Writers Conference, the KaBooM Writing Group (Mary H. Alexander, Susan Christerson Brown, Jan Isenhour, Leatha Kendrick, Gail M. Koehler, Lynn Pruett and Pam Sexton) presented a panel discussion titled, "Collective Energy: Taking Our Writing to the Next Level." Jan, Executive Director of the Carnegie Center, and many other writers in the group are regular workshop instructors. We thought that you would enjoy a few photos from the session.

Join poet and Holler Poet Series founder Eric Sutherland as we explore writing as a tool for activism. We’ll revisit works by well-known and lesser-known writers who have used the pen to confront a broad spectrum of political and social issues. The Living Arts & Science Center is preparing for their annual Day of the Dead Festival. This year, we will be holding a Calaveras exhibit in our gallery and would like to invite writers, specifically poets, to participate in the exhibit in addition to visual artists.

an exhibition of Calaveras for the 2009 Day of the Dead Festival

The 2009 Day of the Dead Festival exhibition will focus on calaveras (skeletons or skulls), a traditional symbol of the holiday, first popularized by Mexican artist, José Guadalupe Posada, in the late 1800’s. His hand printed illustrations depicted skeletons dressed in contemporary clothes and placed in scenes that portrayed the lives and souls of everyday citizens. Humorous and satirical verse was also used to create mock “obituaries” of well known figures—even some who were still living. The poetic calaveras are often referred to as “retaliation against those who would always win while alive.” Today, la calavera has evolved into a widely practiced artform, using two- and three-dimensional skeletons and writings to depict the living as well as the dearly departed.
