Carnegie Center 5K Run/Walk

In Central Kentucky right now, people are being laid off from jobs, looking for new jobs, and taking on new job responsibilities due to downsizing. Some children are two or more years behind in school. There are parents who are unsure how to help their children with homework. Other parents are searching for quality programs for the entire family.

These needs are real, these people are real. They come to the Carnegie Center for help and find joy in writing, reading and learning new things. With many free programs and scholarships available for the ones with low fees, no one is turned away from an opportunity to learn and expand possibilities.

All of this is possible through the contributions and support of individuals like you. Here’s how you can help:

Whether you run, walk, push a stroller, bring the kids, or walk a dog, you can participate in the 5K Run/Walk event hosted by the UK Honors Program Student Council to benefit The Carnegie Center (details below). Or, if a run/walk event is not your thing, you can still help by making a contribution to this worthy cause through the registration form.

5th Annual Carnegie Center 5K Run/Walk
Sunday, April 5, 2009 – 2:00 PM
at UK’s Coldstream Research Campus
(off Citation Blvd and Newtown Pike on Bull Lea Road)

Registration: ONLY $20

I know how important the Carnegie Center is to you and to the community. And while all that is required to participate in this 5K is your registration fee, I urge you to consider taking on a personal fundraising goal of $100 or more and ask your friends to contribute. In this way, we rally the community together to alter the lives of people needing Carnegie Center services. One person has already made a personal $2,000 fundraising goal, contributing $500 himself.

This event is sponsored by UK Honors Program Student Council, UK Student Government, John’s Run/Walk Shop, Sonitrol, Southland Printing, and Starbucks.

Calling all 4th and 5th grade Girls

Here at the Carnegie Center, we’re planning the final session in our 2008-09 Young Women Writers Project. The Young Women Writers Project is funded in part by the Kentucky Foundation for Women and is devoted to encouraging the artistic and personal development of emerging young women writers (representing public and private schools in Fayette and surrounding counties) in grades 9-12. In January and February of this year, the young women met at the Carnegie Center for five consecutive Saturdays, during which they studied fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry and performance under the guidance of established women writers in their 20s and 30s.

Now, we want to encourage them to further hone their craft by mirroring the mentorship they received during the 5 Project workshops: On SATURDAY, April 18th from 10 am-1:30pm, the Carnegie Center will host a FREE workshop during which the Young Women Writers will mentor 4th- and 5th-grade girls who have an interest in writing. We hope to open the workshop to as many as 20 young ladies. The 2008-09 Young Women Writers will conduct the workshop under the leadership of Bianca Spriggs-Floyd, one of the previous instructors, as well as Carnegie Center staff, so rest assured that the elementary school girls will be under careful adult supervision at all times. The workshop will include a free lunch at the Carnegie Center, and we’ll do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions, etc.

Books We LOVE Part 2

Here are some more books we LOVE.

Jennifer Mattox, our Development Director, LOVES "Pride & Prejudice. Long novels, like The Witching Hour, are also something I LOVE---they give you a chance to really spend some time with the characters and understand what drives them."

VISTA member and CCLL tutoring coordinator, Fatimah Shalash, finds is difficult to choose. "Hmm this is a tough one for me because I change favorite books all the time! Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, though it’s been a while. The First Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling), and The Giver by Lois Lowry."

I personally have a lot of books that I LOVE! But, I do have a new favorite. I just finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. Definitely check it out!
