Fall Fundraising Fun

How's that for alliteration?

Last night, Executive Director Jan Isenhour and her husband Larry hosted the final fundraising reception of our $1 million capital campaign. We're just $13,000 away from our goal! Thanks to everyone who attended and to all those who have offered the Carnegie Center their support. And of course, our sincere appreciation to our Fundraising Committee, volunteers, and the Isenhours for opening their doors to us and sharing their wonderful home.

New Family Learning Center Mural

The Family Learning Center (home to our wonderful after-school tutoring program) has a new tree mural thanks to volunteer, Ruth Barcelona. Here's a sneak peak!

Speaking of the Family Learning Center and tutoring...
If you have already completed an intake meeting with our tutoring coordinator, we are still looking for a tutoring match for you. Fatimah will contact you as soon as a tutor is found.

For those who are interested in tutoring, our program is currently at capacity. We will begin taking inquiries again in January. If you would like referrals to other low-cost tutoring programs, please give us a call (859.254.4175).

Memory and Landscape Workshop Date Change

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: WORKSHOP DATE CHANGE!

Poet Dave Harrity’s “Memory and Landscape” workshop, offered as part of the Carnegie Center’s Saturday Seminar series, has been changed from November 8 to November 1---this coming Saturday. Here’s the info about what promises to be a great morning for writers:

Memory and Landscape: How Place Affects Process
Saturday, November 1

This workshop will examine several Kentucky poets and focus on drawing our memories about childhood, place, landscape, and relationships. We’ll focus on how these authors use place as a looking glass into the individual psyche and examine how the past affects the present and the process of writing. Participants will receive a packet with examples and will enjoy hands-on writing and discussion. Led by Dave Harrity

FFLN: Fall Festival

Young Women Writers Project

The Carnegie Center invites young women in grades 9-12 to apply to the Young Women Writers Program, a FREE series of intensive workshops focused on self-expression through writing. Five sessions, held on consecutive Saturdays during January and February 2009, will incorporate creative writing exercises in poetry, fiction, flash fiction and memoir. The selected participants will gather for five 4-hour workshops taught by experienced writers with experience in a variety of fields and genres.

WHERE & WHEN:
The workshop sessions will be held from 10am to 2pm on the following Saturdays: January 31: poetry, how to find your authentic voice and tell your story with Nickole Brown
February 7: flash fiction, music as muse with Sarah V. Combs
February 14: memoir, turning your story into a performance piece with Minna Dubin February 21: poetry, using other art forms as inspiration with Bianca Spriggs
February 28: fiction writing with Lori-Lyn Hurley

All sessions, including a catered lunch, will take place at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington. The Center is located downtown at 251 West Second Street in Gratz Park. Participants must commit to attending at least four of the five workshops; attendance at all five sessions is desired, and participant availability and commitment will be considered as applications are reviewed.

PERFORMANCE:
In spring 2009, the young women will be directed in a public performance to showcase their individual and collective writing talents. The performance is scheduled during Downtown Gallery Hop on Friday, April 17 at 5:30 pm. All participants will receive a $50 stipend for their performance and will be invited to read once more during the 2009 Kentucky Women Writers Conference in the fall.

ADMISSION:
To be considered for the Young Women Writers Program, please submit a cover sheet and a letter stating your interest and motivations for participation. Additionally, a writing sample (no more than 5 pages long) should be included. A creative writing piece is suggested. Information should be mailed or brought to the Carnegie Center by Wednesday, NOVEMBER 19. Selection will be limited to 15-20 Young Women Writers.

Fundraising Campaign Part Deux

Last night, the Carnegie Center had our second fundraising reception for the fall to close out our $1 million capital campaign. To date, we have raised $964,000! We are so close to our goal, and we could not have done it without people like you!
